Busking in Fredericksburg

Busking in the streets of Fredericksburg can be an exhilarating and fulfilling experience. Here’s a guide on where to perform —  and how to be a good neighbor while doing so.

What is busking?
Busking is performing in a public place for donations. This includes things like playing music, singing, drawing, juggling, dancing, magic, and more.

Where can I busk?
Downtown Fredericksburg provides ample opportunity for performing. Caroline Street, Princess Anne St, and William Street receive the most foot traffic. See the map for suggested locations. Avoid private property unless you have permission from the property owner.

Weekdays, weekends, and evenings are good candidates. But be mindful that after 11:00pm your music may be keeping others up. Downtown has a large residential population who may not be into your performance as much as you are.

Can I be loud?
In short, you shouldn’t be audible outside of a 100’ radius. Before performing, review the Fredericksburg noise ordinance: https://www.fredericksburgva.gov/1925/Noise-Ordinance

Can I be on the sidewalk?
Yes. Be mindful that sidewalks must be passable at all times to pedestrians and to those in wheelchairs, with strollers, etc. Be sure to follow posted signs and stay out of the roadway.

Are there places besides the sidewalks downtown?
There are several parks and open spaces that may be good candidates for you:

  • Market Square
  • Hurkamp Park
  • Riverfront Park
  • Old Mill Park

Note: If a location is rented out for an event, you’ll need the permission of the organizer to play. If you see a large group of people gathered, they’re probably not there to see you. So check with the organizer before you perform. Similarly, this applies to First Fridays (see last section below).

What do I need to bring?
Travel light. Your instrument, a portable amplifier, water, and a container for collecting tips are a good start. You likely won’t find electricity, so leave the “Wall of Sound” at home.

Can I accept tips for my performance?
Absolutely. We hope you make gobs of money.

How can I be a good neighbor?

  • If you are posting up in front of an open business, pop in and ask them if it’s okay to play. Be sure to keep the doorway accessible and thank them after your set.
  • Vacant storefronts can be good locations, as you will not affect customers.
  • If you draw a crowd, be sure the sidewalk remains passable.
  • There’s plenty of locations downtown, so leave some distance between yourself and any performers who are already set up.
  • Please remember that many children are present downtown. Therefore, choose your musical set, content of your act, and your general behavior with that standard in mind.

What about First Fridays?
Fredericksburg’s “First Friday” is an event that happens on the first Friday of every month to celebrate the vibrancy of the art community and the greater FXBG community. This event attracts out-of-town and local visitors to the galleries, retailers, restaurants, and businesses located in the downtown district — an awesome opportunity to share your talent!

If you are interested in busking during “First Friday”, you must fill out a request form here. If you have additional questions about this event you can contact Fredericksburg Main Street directly.
